How Do I Get Rid of Bad Breath?

Many people suffer from chronic bad breath or halitosis. Bad breath is something you do not want to be known for, and typically finding the cause is easy. If you suffer from bad breath but also brush, floss, or gargle each day the cause may not be obvious. Taking the time to figure out the underlying problem that may be causing your bad breath is important, and finding a cure can be simple.

Common Cause of Bad Breath

Dental Hygiene

The first area patients should focus on is their dental hygiene habits. Gum or mints are only a short term solution, and finding the cause is the only way you can truly get relief from bad breath. Looking at your dental hygiene is a great place to start because dental hygiene is the most common cause of chronic bad breath. About 85% of bad breath comes from inside the mouth. If you do not brush and floss daily, bacteria can get left behind and cause issues with your breath. Bacteria eats the leftover food particles in your mouth, and as a result leaves a foul smelling odor in your mouth and on your teeth.

Devices

If patients wear retainers, dentures, or mouthguards while they sleep, these devices can trap bacteria or food particles if not cleaned properly. This can attribute to halitosis or chronic bad breath. Taking care of your teeth and mouth is extremely important for your overall and oral health, and can prevent issues such as bad breath that could be embarrassing around others.

Cavities or Infection

If you suffer from cavities or have an infection lingering in your mouth that has not been treated, this can cause bad breath. Attending regular visits to our office for your dental cleaning and exam is important. Our skilled staff can get in front of issues such as cavities or infections and prevent further problems in the future. If patients have issues with their tonsils or throat, this can cause bad breath, and can be from an infection such as strep throat. Patients should seek treatment from their primary care physician if they feel there is an issue with their tonsils or throat.

Dry Mouth or Dehydration

Dehydration or dry mouth is a common cause of bad breath. Saliva and water wash away bacteria or food particles. If your mouth is not hydrated this reduces saliva and can cause halitosis. Our saliva contains pertinent minerals and proteins that help defend against bacteria. Staying hydrated is important to keep our mouth healthy and to prevent bad breath.

Other Possible Causes for Bad Breath

  • Diabetes
  • Throat or mouth cancer
  • Sinus infection
  • Digestive issues
  • Acid reflux
  • Lung infection
  • Liver disease

What Can I Do to Cure My Bad Breath?

  • Brush and floss two times a day
  • Use an antimicrobial rinse daily
  • Tongue scrape daily to remove bacteria
  • Remove any devices and clean them thoroughly
  • Visit our dental office for regular cleanings and exams
  • Review your diet and try and stick to eating healthy foods
  • Drink water and stay hydrated
  • Avoid tobacco products

Should I Brush or Floss First?

Creating an oral hygieneroutineat home is important to help maintain your oral health and keep yourteeth and gums feeling great. Brushing and flossing each day is extremely important, and the order inwhich you do these two items is a common question. Many wonder which way gives the most benefit.

Is Brushing First Better?

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is a key part of keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Brushingcleans yourteeth and removes plaque,as well as prevents cavities from developing. Brushing is not theonly thingyou need to do to keep your oral hygiene in check. Flossing is another integral part of oralhygiene. The order in which you do these two items is a popular discussion.

Brushing does allow the toothpaste with fluoride to get in-between the teeth and help lift residualplaque when you floss after brushing. Studies show that flossing first is better, and is a more efficientway to keep up with your oral health. Flossing last also leaves particles in your mouth if you do notremember to rinse afterwards.

What About Flossing First?

Flossing first has many benefits, and recent studies now recommend that you should floss first beforeyou brush. Flossing first helps to loosen that plaque buildup, as well as increase fluoride concentrationbetween your teeth. When you brush after flossing the brushing then helps to remove those particlesthat are released from flossing. This helps to reduce plaque in your mouth, and lowers your risk ofdeveloping gum disease. Brushing after you floss helps the toothpaste to really do its job to protect yourteeth from decay.

Benefits of Flossing and Brushing

  • Prevents gum diseasethat is caused by poor dental hygiene or not brushingand flossingproperly. Routine dental cleanings in our office areimportant and we recommend dentalcleanings at least twice a year.
  • Removes plaque that is the leading cause of gum disease. If you floss and brush your teethregularly plaque does not havethe chance to harden on your teeth.
  • Prevents decay and costly dental procedures. If you take care of your oral health you can avoidserious complications or dental procedures in the future.

Overall, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy by practicinggood oral hygiene habits. Cavities andgum disease are preventable, and remembering to floss and brush each day will help keep your mouthfeeling great. Visiting our office regularly for your cleaning and exam is another way to stay on top ofyour oral health.

During your dental exam our team will discuss any hygiene recommendations, and review how to keepup with your oral hygiene care at home. Taking care of your oral health is important, and your health isour priority.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that places a cap over a tooth or dental implant. Crownshelp keep the underlying tooth from breaking apart, and can be used to help fix an area on a tooth thatis broken. There are different types of crowns available to patients, and depending on the severity of thetooth will determine which type of crown is best. Crowns are typically made of hard materials such asporcelain or ceramic, but can also be made of gold, resin, or stainless steel. They can be made to matchthe color, size, and shape of your natural teeth and blend in nicely.

Pros of Dental Crowns

Patients may become more sensitive to hot or cold after their crown is placed. Our officetypically recommends a sensitive toothpaste tohelp with this issue.

What Is the Difference Between Composite Veneers and Porcelain Veneers?

If you have stained, chipped, or uneven teeth, veneers can help transform your teeth into a beautiful white smile. Veneers make teeth look uniform, and are bonded to your teeth using a cement material. There are a few different types of veneers, and to determine which type of veneer is best for you depends on the condition of your teeth. The two main types of veneers used today are composite and porcelain veneers.

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers are similar to porcelain veneers, and help with chips, gaps, or length. The process for applying composite veneers is quicker and can be done in just one visit. Composite veneers cost less compared to porcelain veneers, but also do not last as long. The average lifespan for composite veneers is 4-8 years.

Composite veneers are more easily fixed compared to porcelain veneers if a patient has a chip or crack. During your visit, your teeth are prepared and the resin material is added to your teeth. We then cure the area and polish your teeth, leaving you with a beautiful smile. The composite material matches the color and shade of your teeth giving you a natural looking smile.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are made out of durable ceramic and are easily customized to best fit your teeth. This type of veneer is also great for correcting chips, gaps, or uneven teeth. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are applied to the outer surface of your teeth. This type of veneer does require at least two visits to our office.

During the procedure we prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer. Impressions are taken and sent out to a lab. Temporary veneers are placed while you wait for your permanent veneers to be fabricated. When you return for your second appointment the veneers are bonded to your teeth, leaving you with a beautiful white smile.

Porcelain veneers are very durable and do last longer than composite veneers. On average, porcelain veneers last between 10-15 years. Porcelain veneers have less risk of chipping or breaking. If you do suffer damage to your porcelain veneers this requires the entire veneer to be replaced. Veneers catch light just like our natural teeth, and really give patients a natural look. Porcelain veneers are stain resistant, and stay bright white once they are applied. Porcelain veneers do cost more compared to composite veneers, but this is because the placement and process takes longer.

Which Type of Veneer is Best for Me?

When choosing the best type of veneer our team will begin with a detailed consultation. Depending on the severity of your teeth and work needed, will determine which type of veneer is best for you. Our team will listen to your goals, and discuss our recommendations for treatment. We want our patients to understand the differences between veneers, how long they last, and the benefits of each type available before making their decision.

radiation in dental x ray

Dental x-rays are commonly used when you visit your dentist. Many patients wonder if dental x-rays are safe and if they should worry about radiation exposure. Expressing concerns about your health and safety is normal, and the good news is that dental x-rays are extremely safe. You may notice your hygienist covers you with protective equipment and leaves the room during the x-ray. This is to avoid repeated exposure because hygienists perform x-rays daily as part of their cleaning and exam routines. The protective equipment placed on the patient helps to further protect your body and organs that are more sensitive to radiation exposure.

Every day we are exposed to levels of radiation naturally in the environment, and dental x-rays only make up a small fraction of the average daily dose of radiation each day. Patients do not need to worry about exposure, as the amount is so low there is nothing to be concerned about.

Are Dental X-Ray’s Safe?

Dental x-rays do not require much radiation to produce images. With the new technology used today x-rays use 90% less radiation exposure and are safe for patients. Diagnostic imaging gives our team the ability to see inside your teeth and this allows the detection of decay, bone loss, or oral cancer. X-rays can help prevent future issues by diagnosing and treating anything we see promptly.

Benefits of Dental X-Ray’s

  • Detect decay, fillings, gum disease, and oral cancer.
  • Detect changes in soft or hard tissues.
  • Show jawbone development
  • Detect bone loss

Crooked Teeth

Many patients long for that perfect straight smile. It seems everywhere you turn; you see people with beautiful smiles as a result of braces. If you have crooked teeth, you may feel isolated and your self confidence is lost. Not everyone is born with perfect teeth, and some people will need help in order to get that beautiful straight smile. The good thing is there are many orthodontic options to help correct crooked teeth, and get you the smile of your dreams. At Boulder Premier Dentistry, our doctors have years of experience in orthodontics, and creating beautiful smiles is our passion.

What Are the Common Causes of Crooked Teeth?

Genetics

Genetics is the main cause of crooked teeth in many patients. Unfortunately, we do not have control over how our teeth will develop. If a patient has a smaller mouth, their risk for overcrowding increases. Other causes can be related to jaw issues such as overbites or underbites.

Habits

Many children suck their thumbs or use a pacifier. This can actually do more harm than good, and the damage is typically noticed years later. These types of habits can lead to crooked teeth. If you thrust your tongue or breath through your mouth, this can also cause crooked teeth. Orthodontic treatment is typically recommended to straighten teeth, and keep your teeth aligned.

Injury

If you suffered from an injury in the mouth or jaw this can cause crooked teeth. When teeth are loose or lost, this can cause your remaining teeth and jaw to shift, and cause your teeth to become crooked. Seeking help from an orthodontist is important to help repair your mouth, and get your teeth back in place.

Keeping Primary Teeth

Taking care of a child’s baby teeth is important. Primary teeth help the permanent teeth erupt into the right place. If a child loses their primary teeth too early due to decay or trauma, this can directly affect how their permanent teeth erupt. This can cause a child’s permanent teeth to come in crooked.

What Are My Treatment Options?

Orthodontic treatment can help patients with crooked teeth at any age. If you start early, you can get the best possible results. Today, there are many options for orthodontic treatment such as traditional braces or clear aligners. At Boulder Premier Dentistry, we discuss all of the orthodontic options during our detailed consultation process. Depending on the severity of the correction and health of your teeth, we help our patients choose the option that best fits their lifestyle. Your oral health is our priority, and we love to help patients achieve the smile of their dreams.

Dental Insurance Plan

Choosing the right dental insurance plan is important because dental work can be expensive. Even a simple filling can be costly. Knowing what to look for when choosing a dental insurance plan, and understanding what is covered can help you figure out what plan is best for you. Most dental plans will cover 100% or preventative care if you use in-network dentists. This includes exams, x-rays, and cleanings. Basic procedures are typically covered at 80%, and major procedures are usually covered at 50%.

What Should I Check for When Choosing My Dental Insurance?

Group Coverage

Check to see if your insurance company provides group coverage through your employer or programs such as Medicaid. These types of plans can be less expensive and have better benefits.

Check Individual Policies

Individual policies are always more expensive compared to a group policy. Most come with limited benefits, and patients should plan ahead if they need a large procedure. Many insurance companies require a waiting period before you can use the insurance coverage. If you wish to avoid the waiting period there are other plans that do not require you to wait before coverage is available.

Check for Dentists in Your Network

If you know a dentist in your area that you like, ask what insurance plans they accept. Certain policies allow you to go to the dentist of your choice. Other plans such as PPO or HMO require you to use a dentist in their network.

Understand Your Coverage

Dental insurance can be confusing, and it is important to really understand what is covered, and what your expenses will be. Research what procedures are covered and what is not so you are prepared. Some plans have benefits that are limited, and they also have waiting periods before coverage can begin. Knowing how your insurance coverage works can help avoid headaches, and help you choose the best plan available.

Most insurance coverage is great for preventative care such as exams, cleanings and x-rays. Visiting the dentist is important, and choosing the coverage that is best for you can help you pay for those expensive procedures you may need in the future. Talk to your insurance provider to really help you understand the different plans, so you can choose the plan that best works for you.
